SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- New USF head baseball coach Rob DiToma is no stranger to a challenge.
After inheriting the head job at Farleigh Dickinson in 2019 and posting the program's best record in five years last season, DiToma helped build a culture that led to immediate impact on the field for a small school in the Northeast.
When an opening for a new position 2,900 miles away from where he grew up presented itself, DiToma knew it was the exact kind of challenge he desired. Quickly thereafter, DiToma was named the fifth head coach of USF baseball on June 15, 2022.
Alongside him the whole way, DiToma's fiancée Adrian has been the rock in his life. Most recently, the couple has enjoyed a new blessing in their family- their addition of their son Chase.
"None of this would've even been a thought in my head if it wasn't for the unwavering support from my fiancée Adrian," DiToma explained. "Then on March 20, we had our child Chase and that was life changing obviously to say the least. The pure joy he brings us is amazing and he gets to be raised as a California boy now, so we're really excited about that part of our lives as well."
Inheriting a squad that made the postseason in 2021 and has posted consecutive winning seasons in the WCC, DiTomaknows he has the talent in place to continue the strong tradition of Hilltop baseball. Leading young men comes easy to the New Jersey native as adjusting to the needs of student-athletes is a key part of his coaching philosophy.
"As a coach my goal is to be whatever my players need me to be at any given moment, whatevever type of leader they need," DiToma said. "My job is to show them how much I care about them. The more I care about them and the more they know I care about them the more they're going to be willing to do and the further they're going to take their careers."
For those who know the history of college baseball, USF's tradition of success on the West Coast and across the nation is no secret. When the opportunity presented itself for DiToma to etch his name in the program's storied history book, he knew it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
"One of the main reasons I wanted to come to this school is the history and tradition of the program," DiToma explained. "I'm only the fifth baseball coach in the long history of this program, so it goes to show you the great people who have led this program and all I want to do is continue that tradition and we want to continue to be the team in this city that people are proud of."
