Barron and Rogers Lead the Way as USF Knocks Off Utes

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Putting together a complete team effort on Sunday, the USF Dons baseball team (2-1) secured their second straight victory as they defeated the Utah Utes (1-2) by a 6-2 final score at Benedetti Diamond with the chance to pick up the series win tomorrow afternoon.

Leading the way for the Dons was a stellar debut outing from Jesse Barron who tossed six innings of one run ball and matched his career-high by punching out nine Utah hitters on Sunday. At the plate, TJ Rogers had a tremendous day for his team going 2-for-4 while coming through with a huge two-run double that put the Dons up three runs as they coasted to the victory.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Barron got his afternoon off to a strong start by setting down the side in order and retiring six of the first seven batters he faced while recording a pair of strikeouts.
  • The USF bottom of the order got the offense cooking in the bottom of the third starting with Patrick Keighran reaching on an infield single, stole second base and then eventually scored on a Harris Williams III fielder's choice to give the home town nine the early 1-0 lead.
  • Keighran was ready to start another rally in the bottom of the fifth as he once again reached on a leadoff single and advanced to third following Lane Oliphant's groundout and a wild pitch. Williams III came through once again with a runner on third and less than two outs with a sacrifice fly to center field that put USF up 2-0 after five innings.
  • Utah began to rally in the top of the sixth inning putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Barron was able to get a sacrifice fly for the first out, then Oliphant threw out a would be base stealer at third base for the second out before striking out the final batter of his afternoon to get through six innings.
  • The Dons were able to grow their lead in the bottom half of the inning as Rogers shot a double down the left field line that scored Mario DeMera and Will Asby to put USF up 4-1. Rogers was able to cross the plate two batters late on Keighran's RBI ground to second as the hometown nine led 5-1 heading into the seventh.
  • Tacking on another run late, Williams III was able to cross the plate on a DeMera RBI fielder's choice that made it 6-1 USF with two innings left to play.
  • Ryan Yerby came in from the bullpen and tossed three innings and allowed just one run to pick up the save in his Dons' debut as he got the final Utah hitter to line out to left field securing USF's 6-2 win on Sunday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Barron led the way on the mound for the Dons as he threw six innings of one run ball while allowing five hits, walking one batter and striking out nine Ute hitters in his first start of 2023.
  • Rogers provided the big hit of the game with his two-run double as he went 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring a run on Sunday.
  • Keighran also had a nice day at the dish going 2-for-4 while scoring a pair of runs as he helped set the table for a pair of Dons' rallies against Utah.
  • Providing a spark at the top of the order both Williams III and JT Amaral reached base three times on Sunday and did great work on the base paths. Amaral stole three bases in game three of the season, while Williams III swiped two bases as well.
  • Shutting the door in the late innings, Yerby had a strong USF debut throwing three innings of one run ball allowing a pair of hits and striking out two batters in the victory.
