Baseball Falls Short in Series Finale at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – Wrapping up their swing through the Pacific Northwest, the USF Dons baseball team (13-15, 4-8) dropped their series finale against the Oregon Ducks (22-9, 7-5) on Wednesday afternoon by a 16-6 final score from PK Park.

After getting the bats going late in the series opener, the Dons' offense was able to get going earlier on Wednesday led by Mario DeMera and Darius Foster as the duo combined to go 4-for-7 at the plate with five runs scored against the Ducks on Wednesday.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting the action started on Wednesday afternoon, DeMera led off the game with a single and came around to score on a double play that put the Dons ahead 1-0 early.
  • The Ducks were able to respond with back-to-back three run innings in the bottom of the first and second innings as they held a 6-1 lead through two innings of play.
  • USF's offense began to build a response of their own in the top of third as Patrick Keighran, Foster and DeMera each singled to load the bases with nobody out. Keighran came around to score on a passed ball while Foster came around on a Blake Atkins RBI groundout and Will Asby bounced in DeMera to make it 6-4 Oregon.
  • UO would go on to scratch across six more unanswered runs as they plated a run in the bottom of the third and scored five in the bottom of the fourth as they held a 12-4 head into the Dons' half of the fifth.
  • Foster would once again be a key part of the Dons crossing the plate in the top of the fifth as he led off the inning with a double down the right field line and would come around to score on a wild pitch to make it 12-5 Ducks.
  • Oregon scored three more runs before the Dons would tack on their final tally of the afternoon as Foster was hit by the pitch and came around to score on a Ducks' throwing error to make it 14-6.
  • The hometown nine would tack on a pair of additional runs as they picked up the 16-6 victory from PK Park.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Foster was able to reach base three times as he went 2-for-3 with a double, hit by pitch and three runs scored against the Ducks.
  • DeMera had a nice afternoon in the lead-off spot as he went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to end the series.
  • Hitting in the clean-up spot for USF, Michael Campagna was able to reach base three times with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch against Oregon on Wednesday.
  • Weston Lombard and AC Cabrera each had nice outings as neither allowed an earned run combining for 2 1/3 innings pitched against the Ducks.
  • Making his Dons' debut, left-hander Aidan Schraeder tossed one inning allowing just one run and striking out a hitter to wrap up the series.
UP NEXT:
The Dons now return home to the Hilltop for a three-game series this weekend as they will host the Pepperdine Waves (11-19, 4-8) starting on Friday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m. from Benedetti Diamond. Competing last season in Malibu, the Dons dropped two of the three games with Jesse Barron tossing a complete game in the team's series opening victory.
