SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Bouncing back from a tough late innings loss yesterday, the USF Dons baseball team (15-23, 6-14) earned a 4-3 extra innings victory on Saturday afternoon over the Saint Mary's Gaels (18-20, 11-9) to even the weekend series at Benedetti Diamond.
Combining tremendous pitching performances from both
Adam Shew and
Ryan Yerby, the Dons offense was able to come up clutch late in extra innings as
Mario DeMera delivered a walk-off RBI double down the left field line to help USF emerge victorious.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The visiting Gaels were able to score the first run of Saturday's game on an RBI single to grab the early 1-0 lead.
- Looking to even the score, Michael Campagna led off the Dons' half of the fourth inning with a single before coming around to score on a Blake Atkins RBI groundout to knot the score at one.
- Breaking the tie in the middle innings, Will Asby continued his tremendous power hitting season by connecting on a lead-off home run in the bottom half of the sixth to put the Dons ahead 2-1.
- Saint Mary's was able to answer back in the next half inning as they scratched across a run to make it 2-all which would hold until the 12th inning of play.
- Harris Williams III strode to the plate for the USF 12th and was able to get on base with a single up the middle to set up DeMera. Ready to swing at the first pitch, DeMera came through with an double to left giving the Dons their second walk-off win of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Shew turned in another tremendous start for his team as he tossed seven innings while allowing only a pair of earned runs and striking out four Gael hitters to go along with one walk.
- Asby came through with a big home run as he went 1-for-4 with a walk as he's now left the yard seven times this year which ties him for the team lead.
- Picking up his first win of the season with a tremendous outing on the mound, Yerby threw five scoreless frames allowing only a pair of hits and recording two strikeouts.
- Coming up with the big hit in Saturday's win, DeMera went 2-for-6 at the plate with his key RBI double against Saint Mary's.
