SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Competing in the first of three games to wrap up the 2023 collegiate baseball season, the USF Dons baseball team (17-28, 7-18) couldn't get going in their opener against the Portland Pilots (27-20, 16-9) as they fell short by an 9-2 final score on Thursday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The visiting Pilots were able to get off to a quick start on Thursday as they plated three runs in the top of the first to take the early lead.
- USF was able to answer back in the bottom of the second as Patrick Keighran drove a hanging breaking ball in an 0-2 count over the wall in left field to cut the deficit down to 3-1.
- Portland would respond back with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the 5-1 lead through their first three innings of play.
- The Dons waited little time to answer the Pilots' scoring outburst by tacking on another run of their own in the bottom of the third. Mattie Thomas drove a double to the wall in right field with two away in the inning and then came around to score on a Mario DeMera RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit down to 5-2.
- Holding USF off the scoreboard the rest of the way, the Pilots would add three more runs in the fifth and an additional tally in the eighth as they picked up the 9-2 victory on Thursday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Connecting on yet another home run, Keighran went 1-for-3 on Thursday afternoon against the Pilots.
- Setting the tone at the top of the batting order, Harris Williams III was able to reach base twice as he went 2-for-4 in the series opener.
- Hitting in the two-hole for the first time this season, Thomas went 1-for-3 with a run scored as he served as the Dons' first baseman against Portland.
- Putting together a strong outing of the bullpen for his team, Kaleb Woltz threw three innings of one run ball as he allowed just one hit and struck out two Pilot hitters on Thursday.
