Dons Narrowly Drop Series Opener Against Waves

Box Score MALIBU, Calif. – Opening up its weekend in Southern California, the University of San Francisco baseball team (15-15, 0-4 WCC) led for nearly the entire ballgame against Pepperdine (10-20, 5-2 WCC), but a three-run ninth inning gave the Waves the series opening victory on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Starting the series strong, following a Michael Campagna single in the top of the second inning, TJ Rogers homered over the left-field wall to give San Francisco an early 2-0 lead.
  • Following three straight hitless innings, a Brady Renck hit brought Andrew Savage home in the bottom of the fifth to put the Waves on the board. Soon after, Renck also scored following an error and a wild pitch from the Dons to knot the score at 2-2.
  • After failing to get a runner on base in the next two innings, Zack Ramppen got into scoring position with a double into left-center to start the top of the eighth inning, and Campagna quickly drove Ramppen home with a single, putting the green and gold back on top 3-2.
  • Working to extend the lead, Patrick Keighran opened the final frame with a double, and he quickly scored via a Logan Schweizer single to double the Dons' advantage to 4-2.
  • The Dons failed to hold on, however, as Pepperdine saw three hits and three walks in the bottom of the ninth, and the Waves took a 5-4 victory on a bases-loaded walk.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the charge for the Dons today, Rogers hit his fourth home-run of the season, picking up two RBIs in the process.
  • Tying his season high, Michael Campagna led both teams in hits with three, marking the second time this season that the senior has recorded three hits in a game.
  • In his sixth start of the season, Adam Shew allowed just one hit and no runs in 3.1 innings pitched, recording two strikeouts.
