Dons Fall in Extra Innings to San Diego in Series Opener

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (20-29, 3-16 WCC) dropped a hard-fought battle to San Diego (35-13, 18-4 WCC), falling 2-1 in 13 innings in the series opener Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Working through two scoreless innings, San Diego broke the deadlock in the top of the third when Austin Smith doubled to deep right field, scoring Jakob Christian to put the Toreros up, 1-0.
- San Francisco continued to fight midway through the contest, loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out on the board, two walks, and a Kody Watanabe hit by pitch juiced the bases before Logan Leax grounded into a double play to end the threat.
- The Dons tied the game in the ninth inning when Patrick Keighran slipped a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Leax to even the score at one.
- Heading into extra innings, the game remained tied until the 13th as the Toreros gained a 2-1 advantage, plating the winning run on an RBI single from Dustin Allen.
- Earning his team-leading 13th start of the season, Joe Soberon pitched seven stellar innings, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out seven batters.
- Gabriel Barrett followed with 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and fanning two.
- Offensively, Keighran led the Dons with two hits, including the game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
