DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco heads into the 2025 season led by third-year Head Coach Rob DiToma after earning 21 wins, the most under DiToma's tenure. The green and gold succeeded against solid competitors in 2024, earning wins over Creighton, Minnesota, San Jose State, and LMU.
  • Returning for another year, TJ Rogers led the Dons last season as he appeared in 36 games, making 35 starts at shortstop. He posted a strong .316 batting average and a .909 on-base plus slugging percentage while recording five home runs, second most on the team, and 21 RBI in 171 at-bats.
  • Following a successful 2024 season on the mound for the green and gold, Joe Soberon posted a team-leading 3.20 earned-run average, second lowest in the WCC, and was one of six pitchers in the league with a sub-4.00 ERA with at least 10 starts. Soberon also led the Dons in strikeouts (67), innings pitched (78.2), and opponent batting average (.233).
  • Other featured pitchers include Lance Santerre, Gabriel Barrett, Kolby Calia, and Adam Shew. Santerre posted a solid 4.57 earned-run average in 14 appearances and ranked second on the team in strikeouts with 63. Barrett and Calia combined for just 26 earned runs in 84.2 innings out of the bullpen, while Barrett led the team in saves with five.
  • The Dons also have 12 newcomers join the program for the 2025 season, including seven transfers and five true freshmen. Jordan Lewis, a Santa Clara transfer outfielder, enters his first season on the Hilltop after competing for two seasons with the Broncos, slashing .266/.331/.419 in 52 games. Aidan Risse is also set to participate in his first season with the Dons following a four-year career at Division III Bard as a starting pitcher.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS:
  • Sacramento State enters this season under Head Coach Reggie Christiansen in his 14th year at the helm following an eighth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) last season.
  • Following 12 straight winning seasons, the Hornets posted their first sub-.500 record since 2011 at 26-31 with a 14-16 mark in WAC play.
  • Nine pitchers return for their 2025 season, highlighted by last year's high-end starters, Evan Gibbons and Tyler Stewart. Gibbons ended the year with a 6-5 record on the mound and led the team in strikeouts with 60 over 81 innings pitched. Stewart held a 4-4 record with 14 appearances and 69.2 innings pitched, logging the second-most strikeouts with 55. As a team, the Hornets had the second most strikeouts in the WAC with 498, as 10 players totaled 20 or more last season.
  • JP Smith returns for his junior season as he earned All-WAC second-team honors for his performance in 2024. In his sophomore campaign, he started in 56 of the team's 57 games while posting a .273 batting average, the second-best on the team. He recorded double digits in home runs with 22, good for second most in the WAC, and led his team in runs batted in with 48 on the year.
SERIES HISTORY:
Since 2006, San Francisco leads the series history against Sacramento State with a record of 26-13. In their last meeting on April 1, 2024, the Hornets bested the Dons at home, earning a 7-1 win at John Smith Field.
