San Francisco Downs Santa Clara, Earns Series Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (12-10, 3-0) completed the three-game sweep over Santa Clara (9-12, 0-3) with a 6-5 victory on Sunday at Benedetti Diamond.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Trailing 1-0, San Francisco tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Tyler Harries earned a bases-loaded walk.
  • Jackson Nystrom supplied the Dons with their first lead of the afternoon in the fifth inning, registering a two-out RBI double, scoring TJ Rogers, for a 2-1 advantage. Matteo Bellisimo followed with a double down the left field line, scoring a pair of runs to push the lead to 4-1.
  • Zack Ramppen completed the scoring in the fifth inning with a two-run home run, plating Bellisimo for a commanding 6-1 edge.
  • Santa Clara battled back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs to trim the green and gold's advantage to 6-5.
  • The Dons' bullpen held firm in the final three frames, allowing just two baserunners to help secure the 6-5 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Adrian Valdez picked up the win on the mound as he pitched five solid innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three batters.
  • Ramppen paced the Dons offensively, going two-for-three at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Bellisimo also added production at the bottom of the lineup, totaling a season-high two RBI on one hit in four at-bats.
  • Kai Yovanovich, Chris Byhre, and Nick Bacura held Santa Clara scoreless in the final three frames, while combining for five strikeouts. Bacura recorded his team-leading sixth save of the season, putting the Broncos down in order in the top of the ninth inning.
  • San Francisco pitchers faced 38 Santa Clara hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls, six fly balls, while striking out eight and limiting the Broncos to just one-for-five (.200) with runners in scoring position.
