LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Returning to postseason play for the first time since 2022, the University of San Francisco baseball team (26-29) takes on No. 3 seed Saint Mary's (31-23) in the first round of the 2025 West Coast Conference Tournament at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at Las Vegas Ballpark.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
- San Francisco, entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, currently is on a five-game winning streak to finish the regular season, including a non-conference three-game sweep of Utah Valley at home last week.
- Eddison Esquivel led all players throughout the three-game set against the Wolverines, compiling a .636 batting average with seven hits in 11 at-bats, a 1.273 slugging percentage, three extra-base hits, four RBI, and scored four runs, earning him his third Rawalings WCC Freshman of the Wek honors. Beginning the series with a three-for-four performance on Wednesday, May 14, Esquivel recorded two RBI and scored twice. He followed with home runs in back-to-back games, two RBI, and two runs scored on Thursday and Friday to guide the Dons to the series sweep. He finished the regular season tied for the team lead in home runs with 12 while ranking second in RBI with 47. He also leads all freshmen and is 16th overall in the WCC with a .319 batting average.
- Patrick Keighran also performed well offensively for the green and gold, posting a .455 batting average, with one double, one home run and scored four runs in a series. Totaling two multi-hit performances throughout the three-game set, Keighran posted his 12th home run of the season, one of three long balls hit in the eighth inning, in a 6-5 come-from-behind victory on Friday, May 16. He also stole a base in the series-clinching win on Thursday, as he remained a perfect 12-for-12 on the season.
- As a team offensively in the series sweep, the Dons posted a .302 batting average, 29 hits, 15 RBI, 11 walks, six doubles, five home runs, and scored 17 runs.
- Keighran continues his career season, leading the program offensively with a .355 batting average with 54 hits in 152 at-bats. He also paces the team in RBI (48), slugging percentage (.684), on-base percentage (.476), and OPS (1.160).
- On the mound, Aidan Risse and Gabriel Barrett shined in their appearances last week, combining for a 2.25 earned-run average and 13 strikeouts. Earning the start in the series opener, Barrett allowed just one run on five hits and struck out a season-best seven batters. Risse followed with a strong four innings out of the bullpen in the finale, matching a season-high six punch outs to earn his fifth win of the season.
SCOUTING THE GAELS:
- Winners of 16 of its last 20 games, Saint Mary's finished the regular season in third place with an impressive 15-9 record while being one of only two teams in the conference with a winning overall record at 31-23.
- Saint Mary's enters the tournament following a series win over Santa Clara, ending the regular season with five straight WCC series victories. In the sweep at home against the Broncos, the Gaels posted 31 total runs in three games, highlighted by two contests with double-digit runs.
- Eddie Madrigal leads the program and ranks fourth in the WCC, with a .364 batting average and 76 hits in 209 at-bats. To conclude the regular season, he has totaled 26 multi-hit games, including six straight. Madrigal also leads the Gaels in home runs (19), slugging percentage (.689), runs scored (51), and RBI (66).
- Dylan Delvecchio paces all qualified pitchers with a 5.05 earned-run average, allowing 32 runs in 57.0 innings pitched. Leading the Gaels in strikeouts with 64, Delvecchio ranks among the best pitchers in the WCC in opposing batting average (second – .225), wins (tied second – five), and runs allowed (fourth – 32).
- As a team, Saint Mary's ranks first in the WCC in batting average (.296), runs scored (395), RBI (348), and slugging percentage (.469), second in doubles (97) and stolen bases (79), fourth in earn-run average (6.13), and tied for third in saves (11).
SERIES HISTORY:
Since the 2006 season, San Francisco holds a 33-26 advantage over Saint Mary's. The Dons earned their first series win since 2023, defeating the Gaels two games to one in late March at Benedetti Diamond. Following a 14-6 series-opening victory on March 28, the green and gold powered to a decisive 10-4 win in the doubleheader nightcap on March 29 to take the series.
