SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (3-0) concluded its weekend three-game series with a doubleheader sweep of Western Illinois (0-3) Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
GAME ONE: San Francisco 5, Western Illinois 4
- San Francisco jumped ahead in the second inning, plating two runs to take a 2-0 lead. With a runner aboard, Tyler Harries doubled off the wall in right field, scoring Brendan Burke to give the Dons the early advantage. Harries later scored on an RBI single from Jared Lewis to extend the advantage.
- After Western Illinois scored to trim the deficit in half, three more runs came across in the third, fourth, and fifth innings for the green and gold as the lead was pushed to 5-1.
- The Leathernecks recorded three runs in the top of the seventh inning, getting to within one, 5-4. The Dons, however, held the opposition scoreless in the final two innings to secure the victory.
GAME TWO: San Francisco 10, Western Illinois 6
- Trailing 1-0 after the first half inning, San Francisco plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Wyatt Davis provided the offense in the bottom of the frame, recording a three-run home run, his first of the season, to give the Dons the lead.
- Jackson Nystrom capped off a five-run third inning with a three-run home run over the left-field wall, to help push the lead to 8-1. Zack Ramppen and Davis also recorded an RBI during the frame.
- Following a green and gold insurance run in the fifth, Western Illinois battled back in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs to cut its deficit to three, 9-6.
- Myles Kallinger registered the Dons' final run in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring from third on a wild pitch. The Leathernecks failed to score in the final inning as the Dons secured the series sweep with a 10-6 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Six players batted over .300 throughout both contests, with Davis and Nystrom totaling a .500 batting average. Davis went two-for-four at the plate with a home run and five RBI, while Nystrom added a home run and three RBI in two at-bats.
- TJ Rogers led the program with three hits, highlighted by two doubles in the nightcap. Rogers finished the afternoon with a .429 batting average and recorded two RBI.
- In their collegiate debuts on the mound, Thomas Gonzales and Jake Andreas each recorded wins out of the bullpen. In two innings of work in the second game of the doubleheader, Gonzales recorded four strikeouts and allowed one hit and one walk.
- Adrian Valdez earned the start to begin the afternoon as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out four batters. Gauge Lockhart also made his season debut as he allowed three runs on two hits in 3.2 innings in the series finale.
- As a team throughout the two games, San Francisco batted .288 with 19 hits in 66 at-bats and scored 15 runs. Along with the base hits, the Dons recorded 11 walks, with Rogers leading the way with three.
