SUNNYVALE — University of San Francisco freshman Jose
Madera led the men's cross country team to a strong finish at the
Bronco Invitational on Saturday morning.
Madera finished 11th in the 8k invitational race with a time of
24:17.3, breaking the school record he set two weeks ago at the
Stanford Invitational by 13 seconds.
"Jose is continuing to run impressively and show that he is one
of the best freshman runners in the Western Region," USF associate
head coach Tom Kloos said. "The people he's running with are very
elite runners so it says a lot that he's mixing it up with
them."
The Dons finished fourth out of 19 teams and just 14 points
behind a quality UC-Davis squad. Lamar won the men's race. Santa
Clara was ninth, San Diego 15th, Saint Mary's 17th and Pepperdine
18th.
All of USF's top seven finishers set new personal records; most
crushing their previous times.
Junior Will Marquardt finished second for the Dons, crossing the
line in 15th with a time of 24:25.8. Marquardt beat his personal
best, set at the San Francisco Invitational, by 30 seconds.
Classmate Jeremy Grace was next finishing 24th in 24:37.1, which
was a personal record by 27 seconds.
Ganbileg Bor edged his previous best by less than a second,
crossing the line in 20:40.1 in 27th place. Senior Joshua Horeled
rounded out USF's scoring five by setting a 26-second personal best
with a 25:03 for 50th place.
Junior Colin Hopkins finished just two tenths of a second behind
Horeled, beating his personal best by 22 seconds. Michael Barnes
was seventh for the Dons in 25:18, which was a 13-second personal
best for the junior.
"This was a good confidence builder," Kloos said. "We ran some
good times today. For our fifth runner to finish in 25:03 that
shows we are a solid team. Jeremy ran a huge PR and Will bounced
back and ran really well again."
The USF men's B squad, with three freshman and two sophomores
making up the scoring five, won the open race. Adam Smith, Jordan
Baker and Gustavo Meno finished fifth, sixth and seventh,
respectively, with times of 25:46.3, 25:52 and 25:52.7.
Jason Waldram was 15th in 26:35.1 and Charlie Johansen was 18th
with a time of 26:38.8.
The USF women's B squad was 15th in the 5k invitational race.
Carly Holman crossed the line first in 18:06 with Alice Hobbs next
in 18:21.1. Alice Baker and Sarah Pearson finished in 18:26.3 and
18:32,4, respectively. Sahar Bala completed the scoring five with a
run of 18:39.6.
"The women's team had some trouble early on in the race and had
a difficult time overcoming that," Kloos said. "Carly did a good
job breaking out to run the second half of the race really
well."
Freshman Mary Sandri was 14th in the 5k open race in a time of
18:56.6 with freshman Morgan Martin finishing in 19:47.9.
The men's and women's team will both be back in action on
Saturday, Oct. 30 for the West Coast Conference Championships at
Belmont Springs.
