Dons battle, score late to beat Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES—The Dons danced out of danger much of the game and in a tie game in their series opener against Loyola Marymount were able to put together a three-run eighth to take the lead for good as they won 6-4 on Friday night.
With the game tied 3-3 in the eighth inning, the Dons had runners at the corners with no outs when Brendan Hendriks singled to center to drive home Nico Giarratano to put them up by one. Three batters later, Michael Eaton grounded to short for what could have been an inning-ending double play but the ball was thrown away by LMU second baseman David Edwards and allowed two runs to score to give USF a 6-3 lead.
The Lions started a rally in the ninth and scored on a RBI single by Tommy Cheek, who went 5-for-5 on the night. San Francisco closer Houston Hibberd buckled down after that and got Tanner Donnels to strike out and induced the game-ending double play from Edwards to end the contest and pick up his sixth save of the season.
San Francisco (14-14, 4-6 WCC) snapped a short two-game skid and will resume the series with LMU on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Dons got on the board first when in the third inning Derek Atkinson tripled down the righfield line, which allowed Giarratano and Bradley Zimmer to score and give the Dons a 2-0 lead.
Atkinson went 3-for-4 with two RBI on the night.
LMU responded in the bottom half of the inning and got a RBI single from Cheek followed by a sacrifice fly by Edwards to tie the game at two.
LMU has a chance to take a big lead in the seventh when they got the bases loaded with two outs but, after a pitching change, the Dons were able to get out of the inning unscathed.
Abe Bobb battled and rebounded from a rough outing last week as he went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on 13 hits and no walks.
Ben Graff came in the game in the seventh and pitched 1.1 perfect innings to bridge the gap from Bobb to Hibberd.
