The Rundown
Malibu, Calif. - The University of San Francisco Dons (25-22, 14-9 WCC) fell in a back-and-forth game against Pepperdine (23-18, 13-7 WCC), 5-3 in game two of their three game series.
After three scoreless innings, Pepperdine would get on the board first in the fourth inning. With two-outs and a runner on second, the Waves' Jordan Qsar would double down the right field line to bring the runner home from second to make it 1-0, Pepperdine.
USF would answer back in the next half inning, taking the lead with two-outs. The inning began with a walk from Jack Winkler, who was then bunted over to second by Aaron Ping. Jason Kreske, batting in the designated hitter spot, would single into left field to put runners in scoring position with one-out. After Tyler Villaroman fouled out to the first baseman, Jonathan Allen would line a single up the middle, bringing Winkler and Kreske around to score to make it 2-1, USF.
The Waves would take the lead back in the sixth inning on three hits, and error and a hit by pitch to take a two-run lead into the seventh inning. USF would cut the lead to one run in the top half of the seventh with a lead-off home run from Winkler, his first collegiate career home run, to make it 4-3, Pepperdine.
Pepperdine would add a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, on a two-run, solo home run from Cory Wills to make it 5-3. The Dons would go down in order to end the game in the top of the ninth.
With this loss, the Dons will look to win the rubber match of the series as Landen Bourassa will take to the mound in the final game of this three-game series. First pitch will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 6.
COACHES CORNER
USF head coach Nino Giarratano
On the swings in momentum and not executing
"After giving the momentum to Pepperdine in the fourth, we got it back in the fifth but gave it back up in the sixth. If we executed some defensive plays in the sixth we probably win the game. It's one of those things, you can't give up big runs at the end of the game. We didn't get an out on a bunt play, which cost us. We made a two-out error that cost us, so we gave up two runs that we shouldn't have given up. Could have been a 3-3 game, but you got to execute if you want to win big games like this. Base running mistake in the eighth, which didn't give us a chance to tie the game. We put some good at-bats together in the top of the ninth, and you got to give them credit they executed. They had a two-out home run to extend their lead."
On the final game of the series
"Tomorrow is going to be a big game for both teams, and it's going to be a fun day. Landen will give us a good outing, and our bullpen has gotten some rest. We will need to execute and go from there."
On bouncing back tomorrow
"The kids will play hard tomorrow and give it everything they got, hopefully we'll get off to a good start tomorrow. I'm excited for tomorrow and looking forward to how Landen and the offense will respond tomorrow."
