USF Explodes for Season-High 11 Runs to Sweep Villanova

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Wrapping up the weekend on a high note, the USF Dons baseball team (6-2) earned an 11-5 victory on Sunday afternoon against the Villanova Wildcats (1-9) thanks to a middle inning offensive explosion at Benedetti Diamond.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Dons scored 11 total runs across the fifth through seventh innings with contributions up and down the lineup as the sibling duo of Ryan Martinez and Tyler Martinez combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate with with six runs scored, three RBI and a pair of walks against the Wildcats.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The early stages of the game were marked with strong starting pitching as Dons' starter Max Jones kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard up until the top of the fourth as Villanova scratched across the first run of the game on an RBI single.
  • After Hunter Holzemer tossed a scoreless fifth inning, the Dons' offense was ready to build their own rally as R. Martinez and Darius Foster reached on singles and R. Martinez scored on a T. Martinez ground ball to third that was booted by the Villanova third baseman to even the score. Foster came around to score on an RBI single from Harris Williams III and T. Martinez crossed the plate for USF's third run of the day on a sacrifice fly from Mario DeMera to give the Dons a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth.
  • Looking to further extend their lead, Will Asby and T. Martinez each walked and got into scoring position following a wild pitch to set up the inning. Foster plated Asby on a sacrifice fly to left field and Williams III brought home the Martinez brothers with an opposite field double to left giving USF the 6-1 lead. USF added one more tally to their total for the inning as Christian Stapleton brought home Williams III with an RBI single to put USF up 7-1.
  • Villanova was able to get back into the game with four runs in the top of the seventh to get their deficit down to two runs before Asby was able to begin another USF rally with a lead off double and scored on a R. Martinez RBI single. TJ Rogers reached base earlier in the inning on a single to left field and came around to score on an RBI groundout from Foster to make it 9-5 Dons. T. Martinez then was able to hit an RBI double to right field that scored his brother Ryan and USF scored their final run of the game on a Michael Campagna RBI walk that scored DeMera to put the Dons ahead by six runs.
  • USF's bullpen slammed the door in the eighth and ninth as Stapleton ended the game with a nice diving stop to take away extra bases as the Dons earned the 11-5 victory and their first series sweep of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • R. Martinez had a career day at the plate going 3-for-4 while working a walk and scoring three runs in the series finale against the Wildcats.
  • Williams III did it again for the Dons at the top of the order as he went 2-for-3 with a couple of walks, a double, run scored and three stolen bases as he currently leads the West Coast Conference in bases swiped.
  • T. Martinez got it done at the bottom of the USF order going 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored while stealing two bases against Villanova.
  • Asby provided some thump for the Dons as the team's DH going 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of doubles and a walk to help cap off the sweep.
  • Coming out of the bullpen, Oscar Lepe and Matt McConnell combined to toss 2 2/3 innings of shut out ball to end the game allowing just one hit and a walk to go along with four strikeouts.
