SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Wrapping up their final road conference game of the 2023 season, the USF Dons baseball team (16-26, 7-17) competed hard as a team before ultimately coming up short to the Santa Clara Broncos (27-15, 13-8) by a 7-4 final score from Stephen Schott Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Following a pair of scoreless frames from each starting pitcher, the home Broncos were able to get on the board first as they scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to grad an early 2-0 advantage.
- Both offenses would stay quiet through the middle innings before the Dons took their chance to strike in the top of the sixth. Blake Atkins led off the USF inning with an infield single and Mario DeMera followed with a knock of his own to put two on base. Harris Williams III would then provide the break through for the Dons as he launched a three-run home run to right that gave USF the 3-2 lead.
- Santa Clara would then author their own response in the bottom half of the inning as they would push across two more runs to regain the 4-3 lead on Sunday.
- The Broncos would go on to add three more runs in the bottom of the eight to grow their lead to 7-3 with three outs for USF to play with.
- Fighting all the way until the end, Christian Stapleton led off the ninth with a home run to right to get USF back within three but ultimately fell short by a 7-4 final score.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Hitting third for the series finale, Williams III took the team lead with his eighth home run of the season as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored on Sunday afternoon.
- Waiting to the later innings to tie Harris for the team lead in round trippers, Stapleton knocked his eighth of the season over the wall as he went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI against the Broncos.
- Manning third base for USF in the series finale, DeMera went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored against Santa Clara.
- Putting together strong outings on the mound, Gabriel Barrett and Matt McConnell combined to throw four scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of Bronco hitters on Sunday.
