SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Led by solid pitching performances, the University of San Francisco baseball team (10-5) earned a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon, defeating Saint Peter's (4-10) 4-2 and 3-2 at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
GAME ONE:
- After a scoreless opening frame, San Francisco took the game's first lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Two straight Dons reached base, with Michael Campagna leading off with a single and Logan Leax following with a five-pitch walk. Campagna plated the Dons' first run on a Patrick Keighran RBI groundout, and Leax gave the green and gold a 2-0 advantage, scoring on a wild pitch later in the frame.
- The Dons added another run in the fourth, extending their lead to 3-0. With a runner aboard and one out, TJ Rogers ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring Keighran.
- Saint Peter's put a run on the board in the top of the fifth, trimming into the San Francisco advantage, 3-1.
- Keighran continued to shine in his first appearance this season as he was responsible for the Dons' final run with an RBI double to right field, scoring Zack Ramppen for a 4-1 lead.
- In a last effort, the Peacocks scored one final run in the seventh on a Garrett Greco double to right field, scoring Alex Rakas to trim the lead to 4-2.
GAME TWO:
- The Dons jumped out on top early, scoring in the first two frames to gain a 2-0 lead. In the opening frame, Kody Watanabe led off with a single through the right side of the infield and stole second in the following at-bat. In scoring position, Watanabe scored quickly, crossing home plate on a Ramppen RBI single to center field.
- Watanabe reached in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Dons a 2-0 lead on a double down the right-field line, scoring Matty Fung.
- Another run came across for the green and gold in the fourth on a Ramppen RBI single. Tyvon Moore and Watanabe led off the frame with a walk and a single, and Ramppen followed with a hard-hit ball to left field, scoring Moore for a 3-0 advantage.
- The Peacocks scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Ryan Dacey.
- San Francisco shut Saint Peter's down in the final two innings as Cal Amborn earned the save and solidified the 3-2 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Watanabe led the Dons offensively throughout the doubleheader, recording five hits in seven at-bats. In the afternoon's second game, Watanabe produced a season-high three hits while scoring one run and recording one RBI.
- In his first appearance, Keighran went one-for-two at the plate, recording two RBI and scoring one run.
- Lance Santerre had another stellar performance on the mound, pitching four strong innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out five batters in the first game.
- Gabriel Barrett picked up the save, finishing the win off with three innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
- Andrew Hazell earned the start in the nightcap, going 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and tallying a season-high seven strikeouts.
- Amborn finished the final two innings, picking up the save while posting zeros across the board.
