Dons Fall Short in Doubleheader Sweep at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (19-28, 3-15 WCC) dropped a West Coast Conference doubleheader to close the series at Portland (27-17, 13-5 WCC) falling 7-1, and 10-4, on Friday at Joe Etzel Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
GAME ONE:
  • Portland got off to an early lead in the bottom half of the opening frame when Spencer Scott scored on an error in the infield on a Ben Patacsil groundball, giving the Pilots a 1-0 advantage.
  • Matty Fung evened the score at a run apiece in the top of the third on a base hit through the right side of the infield, scoring Logan Leax to tie the game at one.
  • The Pilots responded with five unanswered runs in the bottom half of the third inning to regain the lead and take a commanding 6-1 edge.
  • Portland, holding San Francisco scoreless through the final six frames, tacked on a final run in the seventh on a Jake Holcroft RBI single to solidify the scoring at 7-1.
GAME TWO:
  • In a scoreless affair through the first five innings of play, the Dons gained an advantage in the top of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Tyvon Moore kickstarted the frame with a leadoff double that split the outfielders in the right-center field gap. Moore, making his way to third on a Fung groundout, later scored on a Leax sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Portland again answered the call and scored two runs in the following half inning to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Trailing until the eighth inning, the green and gold posted three runs to regain the lead, 4-2. With two outs and two runners aboard, Michael Campagna came through with a single to left field, scoring Moore to tie the game at two. Zack Ramppen and Patrick Keighran followed with back-to-back singles as Fung and Campagna came around to score.
  • Portland regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring eight runs to take a 10-4 edge heading into the final inning of play. The Pilots shut down the Dons in the ninth to solidify the doubleheader and series sweep.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leax finished the doubleheader going two-for-four at the plate with an RBI, two walks, and a run scored.
  • Earning the start in the nightcap, Moore recorded his fourth multi-hit game this season with two doubles in three at-bats while scoring two of the Dons' four runs.
  • Joe Soberon had a stellar performance on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader, allowing just two runs on two hits while fanning seven batters in 5.2 innings of work.
UP NEXT:
