Battle in the Bay Classic Draws/Results
SAN FRANCISCO – Two of the most exciting moments from the third day at the Battle in the Bay involving Dons occurred in the morning doubles matches, on both the men's and women's side, to open play on Saturday at the California Tennis Club.
On the men's side,
Oliver Poysti partnered with TCU's Jerry Lopez to take on a tough duo from Portland in Mathieu Garcia and Mike Pervolarakis. The Pilots looked to be well on their way to victory, and had the mixed team on the ropes before Poysti and Lopez came roaring back for the 8-7(6) victory in the round of 16. It took a tiebreak in the quarterfinals as well before Lopez and Poysti dispatched the No. 3 seed in the draw, Cal's Bjorn Hoffmann and Floran Lakat, 8-7(6).
"It's big to still have a guy playing on Sunday," noted USF head men's tennis coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "It's really hard to play on a mixed team, and today they came back from a 7-3 deficit in the first match and saved five match points. In the second match, they were down 5-2 in the tiebreaker and came back and won it, so it was pretty awesome."
In women's doubles, two Dons' squads were vying for a place in the event finals, and
Shanna Dos Santos and
Anna Sokiran mirrored their male counterparts with a come-from-behind effort to knock off Yuki Asami and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga from Pacific, 8-7(3). The USF tandem will go head-to-head with the bracket's top-seeded pair of Arizona's Paris Corley and Lauren Marker.
"Getting somebody in the final, whether it's the men or the women is a big deal," added USF's director of tennis
Peter Bartlett. "Especially as the host of the tournament you want to try and represent, so hopefully the women will represent tomorrow against the top seed from Arizona."
Both doubles teams are slated to take the court on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the women eyeing the tournament title and the men looking to advance to the finals at 10:30 a.m. Along with the conclusion of matches at the Cal Club, USF will host it's annual Harper for Kids Day in conjunction with our community partners, to teach Coach John Wooden's Pyramid of Success to youth. All the day's events begin at 9 a.m. Fans are welcome and encouraged to attend, listen at home on
