Dons Rout Peacocks to Open Four-Game Series

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Recording season-high 18 hits, the University of San Francisco baseball team (8-5) earned a dominating 15-6 victory over Saint Peter's (4-8) in the opening game of the series Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Highlighted by a Kody Watanabe RBI double to left-center field, San Francisco took control in the opening frame, scoring three runs for an early 3-0 lead.
  • Watanabe was responsible for the Dons' fourth run of the game in the following frame, picking up an RBI single to plate Matty Fung, extending the lead to 4-0.
  • Scoring three more runs in the third, the Dons broke open the game and extended their advantage. Three consecutive base hits at the start of the inning from Michael Campagna, Logan Leax, and Zack Ramppen loaded the bases with no outs. A Tyvon Moore fielders' choice and two singles from TJ Rogers and AJ Guiliana later in the inning helped guide the Dons to a 7-0 lead.
  • Continuing to build on their lead in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, the Dons added eight more runs for a 15-0 edge.
  • Leax highlighted the Dons' scoring run as he picked up his third hit of the game in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Leax punched a single to center field, scoring Logan Schweizer and Watanabe for an 11-0 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, finished with three more runs with RBIs from Logan Azem, Schweizer, and David Bedrosian to push the green and gold's advantage to 15-0.
  • Saint Peter's got on the board in the top half of the seventh, scoring four runs to cut into the deficit. The Peacocks recorded two more runs in the eighth, trimming the Dons' advantage to 15-6 before Magnus Nelson, in his first appearance on the mound, closed out the win for the Dons in the ninth.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • San Francisco totaled a season-high 18 hits, with 10 different players recording a base hit.
  • Leax was perfect at the plate for the Dons, leading the team with four hits in four at-bats. Finishing the game with a season-high in base hits, Leax also added two RBI and scored two runs.
  • Watanabe, Campagna, Bedrosian, Ramppen, and Rogers all recorded multi-hit games for the green and gold, totaling two knocks apiece throughout the contest.
  • In his first-career start, Kolby Calia pitched four stellar innings, allowing just two hits while striking out a season-high five batters.
  • Blake Shepardson, the first pitcher out of the bullpen, followed with two perfect innings and totaled four strikeouts.

San Francisco returns to action at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 9, when it takes on Saint Peter's in a doubleheader at Benedetti Diamond.
