2011 WEST COAST CONFERENCE ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM
2011 SEASON: Made 16 appearances with three starts, also entered three games at first base… went 2-2 in 17.1 innings with a 6.23 ERA… began his collegiate career by throwing a hitless inning to get his first collegiate win against UC Davis (2/27)… second win came at then No. 15 California where he gave up just one hit and no runs in two innings (3/16)… threw a shut-out inning against Oregon (3/23)… turned in another two-inning outing against Cal Poly (4/5)… pitched 1.1 hitless innings at Oregon (4/18)… posted his first postseason strikeout against No. 12 UCLA in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional (6/5).
PREP CAREER: Named a second team All-American by MaxPreps.com… earned Player of the Year honors from the San Jose Mercury News and Cal Hi Sports… first-team all-state selection by Cal Hi Sports and MaxPreps.com… hit .407 with 30 RBI his senior year at Archbishop Mitty High School with a 1.01 ERA, 8-2 record and 48 strikeouts to lead the Monarchs to a Central Coast Section Division I title… also played four years of water polo and scored 130 goals during his senior season… named to honor roll for all eight high school semesters.
PERSONAL: Born in July of 1992 in Los Gatos, Calif… parents are Steven and Barbara Balog… chose USF because he liked the coaching staff, the program and the city and his older brother Nik plays baseball for the Dons as well… dad played baseball at San Diego State... thinks the best thing about being an athlete is learning time management skills to balance academics and athletics and learning about what you are capable of doing… the most impressive person in his eyes is his father Steven Balog… the thing he likes most about San Francisco is the “real life atmosphere”… favorite quote is from Benjamin Franklin, “I’m a strong believer in luck and I find that the harder I work, the luckier I am.”… favorite book is the Great Gatsby… favorite movie is Inglorious Bastards… major is Business Administration.
