The 1985 season was one of great frustration for USF. The Dons started well, but never could get the team playing as a unit due to a seemingly endless stream of key injuries throughout the season. Â Players such as Tor Sveen, Ken Boardman, Steven Torkelsen and Jan Helge Schiefloe missed games and tried their best to play in other games while not at peak condition.
As a result, USF missed the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 1972. This despite the fact that USF captured the West Coast Athletic Conference postseason tournament with a 2-1 win over Santa Clara in the semifinals, and a 3-2 victory in overtime over Portland in the title game. In 1985 the winner of the conference tournament did not receive an automatic bid to NCAA postseason play and the Dons did not earn an ‘at-large’ berth despite a 12-6-3 overall record.
The Dons opened the season with a 3-2 win over highly touted Penn State. Other early season highlights included a 7-1 win over UC Santa Barbara and an 8-0 drubbing of Creighton. On Halloween night under a full moon the Dons beat up on Pacific 16-1 as Robert Magalhaes scored four goals and Marco Lucchetta added three tallies.
Magalhaes paced USF over the course of the season with 15 goals and George Vukic set an All-Time USF single season record that still stands with 21 assists. Vukic and Boardman were both named All-Conference, the latter getting the nod for a third consecutive season.
