For the past year, the USF Council of the Knights of Columbus has sponsored a baseball team in the Class AA, San Francisco Recreation League. The team has played every Sunday since the Spring of 1961 on the various diamonds of the city. The end of the Winter season last Sunday found the USF K.C. team a solid second place finisher. "In the face of very strong opposition, runner-up is considered extremely respectable for a relatively new club," Grand Knight Don Ahlbach said. The team, which was formed and is managed by three Brothers of USF Council, Don Ahlbach, Bill McClure, and Don Levy, in preparation for the Summer league, will travel the prison circuit. Games have been scheduled at the following .State Prisons: Folsom on March 18th, San Quentin on April 8th, Soledad on April 15th, and Tracy on May 6th (TheFoghorn).
Leonardini played on the frosh baseball team in 1960.
In addition to Ahlbach, McClure, and Levy, other members of the prison-tour group are Larry Bennett, Frank Portman, Phil Avalar, Tom Leonardini, Jerry Ferrari, Ron Sweeny, Dennis O'Brien, Julie Cane, Joe Harrington, Dennis Russell, and Jack Keneely. "As the team takes the diamond on Sunday at Folsom, and subsequently at the other prisons during the next few weeks, both the Knights of Columbus and the University of San Francisco will be in the spotlight. As in the past year, the team will represent both the K.C.'s and USF. And, as in the past year, everyone can be proud of this energetic and accomplishing group," Ahlbach said. (TheFoghorn).
