Pete Peletta yanked his first squad off the floor after five minutes had elapsed in each half, leaving the burden and substantial lead in the hands of his reserves. Former Don mentor Ross Guid- ice followed Peletta's example, replacing the once all-star starting line-up of Hal Perry, John Cunningham, Dave Lillevand, Charlie Range, and Buffalo Bill Mallen. Only Charlie Range, of this quintet, didn't play on the fabled '56 team that saw coaches Phil Woolpert and Ross Guidice and the team of Bill Russell, K. C. Jones, Hal Perry, Mike Farmer, Mike Presseau, Gene Brown, Al Dunbar, Bill Mallen and Dave Lillevand walk through the NCAA National Champsionships and off with the crown for the second consecutive year.
Charlie Range went on a scoring spree and dumped 24 points —18 of those in the first half— to pace USF to a 61-49 victory over San Francisco State here Tuesday evening in a non-league contest. The 24 points by Range was an individual high for the Dons this season — Bob Gaillard had scored 21 against Hawaii — and also a career high for Range (TheFoghorn).
