Biography: Barbeau came to USF as a walk-on athlete in 1958, and then earned a baseball scholarship for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. His best season at the plate was in 1960 as a junior when he hit .330 and led the team with 35 hits.Â
Why Barbeau Chose USF: "My uncle, Bill Lawson, had graduated from USF in 1951. He was our family’s first college graduate. I was the second, ten years later. He encouraged me to attend and USF was the only school I applied to."
Favorite USF Memory: "I hit a bases loaded triple over the head of Dick Bass when we played the College of Pacific Tigers. Bass later went on to play football for the Los Angeles Rams."Â
The USF Student-Athlete Experience:Â "I recall attending early registration. Since I was a baseball player, I was allowed to leave class early to attend games. I also remember getting free tickets to the Giant games. I was able to attend the first ever big league game at Seals Stadium between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants won the game, and we sat in the center field bleachers right behind the great Willie Mays."
Life After USF:Â Barbeau worked in banking for 16 years, then joined the Automatic Data Processing field for 20 years in New York. He returned to California in 2001, and volunteers with Partners in Reading, in San Jose, CA.
