    Men's Soccer (1967)

For the Soccer team, 1967 was a season which did not turn out as it should have. Coming off the NCAA championship in 1966, and returning with personnel capable of a repeat performance, the Don Soccermen had high hopes for 1967. The hopes received their first blow when goalie Mike Ivanow was injured and declared out for the season even before the WCISC schedule had begun. Shortly thereafter USP lost a close contest to San Jose State 2.1 on the narrow Spartan field.

In the next seven games, the Dons fought their way back to a rematch with the now WCISC champions, San Jose State. Over this stretch, the Dons outscored their opponents 37-3, and held five teams scoreless. But against San Jose, the Dons, minus four starters due to injuries, fought to a 3-3 tie, only to be declared losers because they had fewer corner-kicks.

Thus neither the WCISC nor the NCAA crown returned to the Hilltop in 1967. Despite their failure to match the success of the 1966 season, 1967 varsity Soccer team must be rated among the great athletic teams in the University's history. Outstanding performances by forwards Kirk Apostolidis and Sandor Hites them positions on the first string All-American team, and center halfback Jorge Fernandez was named second string All-American (Ignatian).
