Philip H. Kelly was another Palma High School three-sport performer, a quarterback, two-time All-League selection in basketball, and a solid infielder on the diamond. Kelly played basketball on the Dons frosh team averaging 2.9 points a game and collecting 32 rebounds in 16 games. The 6-2, 185-pound Kelly made his impact on the Hilltop as a three-year starter at safety for the Dons. He had a two-interception game in a 28-6 win over Azusa Pacific in 1967. He was also Junior class president, and a member of Phi Sigma Chi (PalmaAthletics).
Phil Kelly, a transfer student, takes over Figone's vacated defensive back post. At 6-2, he has an advantage over many receivers. Lineman Jim Klaczak and split end Gil Await both return after minor injuries which had the pair hobbled over the past week. The offensive line, less Albertazzi and Donohoe, returns intact, as does the defensive line outside of Pitetti. Offensive and defensive backs abound. Dennis DiRicco, Brad Pappalardo, Rick Figone, and Steve Mongillo will return on the attacking forces, while Al Lopez, Pete Sparks, Phil Kelly, and Dennis Hall return as starters in the defensive backfield (TheFoghorn).
