Although the U.S.F. Dons are no longer active on the grid scene, their former players and coaches lave been continuing to further their fame during the past year. Perhaps the most active of these was Bill Howard, former Don backfield coach under Jeff Cravath and Al Tassi who is now top tutor of the San Francisco Professional football team in the Pacific Coast Conference. Howard, not only heads this professional team, but also mentors the strong Coast Guard Pilot team from Bay and Powell streets. Former Dons being coached by Howard with the professionals are Frankie Scanlon '44, Lou Finch '41, and Tate Landry '46.
Lou Finch will take over the first string fullback chores. This move came as a complete surprise. Most of the people connected with the University's football activities knew that Louie Finch knew both the full and quarterback plays, -but no one ever thought of Cliff Fisk as a quarter. of the season. Finch's performance in the last five minutes of the Creighton game convinced George Malley that he could not have such a valuable man parked on the bench for 55 minutes when he could be in the thick of things. Cliff Fisk's punting, which incidentally has improved greatly, blocking and down the middle power could not be sacrificed. Ii may seem strange having a guard calling ihe offensive plays, but when a man has a vivid imagination, and is willing to take a couple of long- shots there's not much that can be done to keep him down. At the present writing, the starting backfield will be composed of Mosconi and Reid at halves, Finch at full and Cliff Fisk at the quarterback slot (TheFoghorn).
