Bullock pitched well but he had control problems, walking seven in 5 2/3 innings. Subsequently the Dons got behind 5-1 but they battled back, and with Reggie Brown driving in two runs with a triple, they pulled within two at 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Dons added another run on a pair of doubles but with the tying run at third with two outs, Joe Potulny grounded out to first to end the game.
The next day, the Dons jumped off to a 5-1 lead of their own in the first game of a doubleheader. But in the fifth inning, USF starter Bob Marquez got into trouble as two singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Then with two outs, Fresno exploded with a two run single and a two run homer by catcher Dave Holt. Dons relief ace, Steve Eppendido couldn't hold the Bulldogs back and Fresno went on to win, 9-5. The second game was a disaster for USF. Starter Ken Huffman was shelled by the Fresno team and in the third inning, he gave up three straight doubles and a massive home run to the right fielder, Tim Painton, that sailed high over the right field fence. Once again the Dons, bullpen could not do the job and the final score was 14-2.
The second game was all Cal as Don Driscoll rocked a two run homer off USF starter Steve Eppendido in the first inning. Eppendido got out of the inning, but gave up three more runs in the second. But if the first two innings were a struggle for the Dons the third was a disaster. Ken Huffman was brought in from the bullpen, but for the second week in a row he was shelled. The Berkeley batsman greeted him with a pair of three run homers that led to a nine run inning. After that the game was a foregone conclusion, with Cal winning 15-2 (TheFoghorn).
