USF had an opportunity to break the game open in the bottom half of the the inning, as John Mangiante led off with a double, and was followed by an Al Smoot single and stolen base. However, Mangiante and Smoot were left stranded, as Santa Clara relief ace Mike Beuder came in to snuff the Don rally by striking out the next three hitters in succession.

USF pulled out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, but the Broncos came right back with three in the top of the fourth, one in the fifth, and seven in the sixth inning as eleven batters came to the plate. The final score ended up 13-10. After two singles in the first inning by DH Al Smoot and third baseman John Mangiante. Joe Torrise got USF on the scoreboard with a long double to left field. Greg Jewett followed that with a sacrifice fly that drove in Mangiante, and the Dons led 2-0. Two more came across in the second on a bases loaded single by Mangiante making it 4-0. Greg Jewett opened the third with a triple down the right field line and, after a walk to catcher Mark Johnson, Jewett scored on an infield out (TheFoghorn).
