With captain Bill Schwallie firing a terrific round of golf, USF's golfers opened the season Tuesday with a 16-11 win over St. Mary's at Harding Park. Schwallie, the hotshot from Hawaii, had a three under par 69 to lead the field. Tom Jacobs, Bob Johnson, and Dave Dillon also turned in excellent cards. The Don golfers, on the basis of a very well balanced team, is expected to have a great season on the links. Five of the six players used against St. Mary's are back from last year. Co-captain Ed Wagner, commenting on the club's possibilities, stated, "I've been on the team four years now, but always we've had only one or two real good performers. Now our whole squad Is loaded." Wagner, Schwallie, Jacobs, Johnson, Phil Anderson, and Dillon are currently the leading golfers. Coach Phil Woolpert has another prospect in Joe Stevens, a newcomer from the Philippines. Co-captain Schwallie, a junior, seniors Wagner and Dillon plus Jacobs and Johnson are all back from last year's team. Anderson, only a freshman, is the sensation of the club as the number two man (TheFoghorn).
