Josh McKay is a retired American soccer player who is an Assistant Coach with the University of San Francisco men's soccer team. He played professionally in Major League Soccer and the USISL.
McKay grew up in Pleasanton, CA. In 1991, he began his collegiate career at UNLV. He transferred to University of San Francisco after his freshman year and played three seasons for the Dons. He graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor's Degree in English.
In 1995, McKay played for the Hawaii Tsunami of the USISL. On February 7, 1996, the Colorado Rapids selected McKay in the 13th round (122nd Overall) of the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft. He played four games for the Rapids before being waived on November 8, 1996. In 1997, McKay signed with the Richmond Kickers. In 1998 and 2001, the Kickers were crowned division champions and finished as league championship runner-ups in McKay’s final season. He played through the 2002 season with Richmond. When the Kickers released him in the spring of 2003, McKay retired and entered the coaching ranks. On August 13, 2003, the University of San Francisco hired McKay as an Assistant Coach for its men's soccer team, and in 2005, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach, where he worked until 2014 (USFAthletics).Â
USF dominated the first half also and the USF-Charlotte by controlling the ball and following a game plan of clearing the ball to the corners, then centering it back in. From watching it evolve, it seemed almost designed completely around midfielder Josh McKay. "Well that's why they want me here," said McKay. "I'm here with the left foot to put it down the (side)line, and bring it back across the middle. I've got the big guys coming down the middle of the field, and I'll stick the ball on their heads and they'll score. McKay added,"We are far from being at our peak (TheFoghorn)."
