This is a tribute to the hard work of coaches Ken Bowman and Bob Greenberg as well as ihe support given to them by Athletic Director Bill Fusco. Seniors Mark Johnson, Malt Allio, Al Smoot, Doug Ogden, and Matt Campi should also be acknowledged for the hard times they have endured in past year to bring lhe baseball program to the blossoming stage that it has reached during the course of this season. The main reason for the improvement in the Diamond Dons during 1981 had to be the offense generated by USF. It was a banner year for Don batsmen as they have already tied or broken eight offensive records. Bill Murray has broken the record for runs scored with 46. and is within one of the doubles record with 13. Dave Paulus has a record tying live triples. Al Smoot has set records lor RBI's (35). base hits (73), home runs (II), and bases on balls (36). Doug Ogden has been the workhorse of the pitching staff, breaking the old standard of 27 games pitched for one season.
Both Andre Rachal and Doug Ogden have given the mound crew some sort of stability. Rachal has been dazzling as of late, winning his last five decisions in a row while raising his record to 5-1. "He pitches with a lot of heart and gives you everything he has." said pitching coach Bob Greenberg after "Pops" had defeated Santa Clara 3-2. Doug Ogden has also proven equal to the task in his role as the short relief ace. Greenberg feels that. "That role is perfectly suited for Oggie. He can throw hard and isn't afraid to come in and pitch every day. All 1 hope is that we have a lead by the seventh inning so that we can bring him in to shut the door (TheFoghorn)."
