Assistant coach Luis Sagastume, last year's team captain, also commented on the new Don goalie, "John Camacho is an all-around soccer player. He can play anywhere." In reference to his goalkeeping ability, Sagastume stated, "During this past summer, John played on the San Francisco All-Star team which competed in Vancouver for the Kennedy Cup. Canada, Mexico and Los Angeles were also represented. In two games playing goalie, John allowed no goals and was voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. I am sure John will do a good job."
Don coach Steve Negoesco hopes that teamwork and conditioning will counter the bigger Spartan attack. An added sidelight will feature a brother versus brother match. It will involve new USF goalie John Camacho and his brother Henry, an All-League forward for San Jose last year. Coach Negoesco has stressed that the better team will win, despite the fact of the game being played in San Jose. "With a home field, home fans, and a good team, San Jose State should be our toughest opponent in the regular season," said Coach Negoesco."We are used to playing without any fans but the boys would be given a great mental lift if we could get some support for our team."
As usual, the Dons took the first shot and progressed from there. But also as usual, the opposing team was not playing for fun. A Chico thrust almost engulfed goalie John Camacho, but there was no score. USF also had a breakthrough but the kick was wide. Then the Dons took over. At 10:30 of the first period Sandor Hites rifled a 25-yard line drive shot off the Chico goalie for a 1-0 Don lead. A little after this, wing Lothar Osiander had to retire because of a leg injury and was replaced by Rudy Dekkers. During this entire period and throughout the game fullback Sam Gerzowski was playing all over the field. He saved one big breakaway threat in this period alone (TheFoghorn).
