Roy Giorgi was born on December 24, 1927 at Saint Francis Hospital in San Francisco to his proud parents Leventina and Anton Giorgi from Lucca, Italy.

He was raised in the Mission district of San Francisco, and attended Mission High School, where he played football, soccer, and basketball. An exceptional athlete on the football field, Roy frequently found himself on the sports pages of the Chronicle/Examiner with headlines such as "Gorgeous Giorgi does it again."

After graduation, Giorgi served  in the U.S. Navy, and played on their football team and in the Rice Bowl, while stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947 and returned home to San Francisco. After attending City College of San Francisco, where he was named an All City Football player, he received a full scholarship to USF to play football. He was an integral part of the USF Dons legendary team of 1950-1951 that went undefeated and untied. Following college, he joined the San Francisco Police Department, where he served from 1956-1978 (SFChronicle).
