James Daniel Mangan was born on September 24, 1929 in San Francisco, and attended St. Ignatius high School and the University of Santa Clara, prior to transferring to USF. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1949 and joined the New York giants in 1956. He plated catcher and was 5' 10" and 190 lbs. He batted and threw right. He played three seasons in baseball and eight in the minor leagues. After his professional career, he taught high school and owned a small business (Wikipedia).

This game will give the students a chance to see the 1947 Dons in action for the first time this year in the Bay Area, against one of our traditional college rivals. Coach Cottrell's charges have given Santa Clara one of its best season's in a decade. The Bronco mound staff is adequately manned with Eldin O'Brien holding the number one spot. Christianson, Crowley, Toso, and Gomez make up the well-balanced infield. The lineup in the outfield reads Bedolla, Kelly, Prentice, with Mangan and Fiscalini dividing the chores behind the plate (TheFoghorn).
