The 1963 soccer team under the guidance of Head Coach Steve Negoesco, returned the Northern California Intercollegiate Conference league championship to the Hilltop. The Dons had to overcome a poor start which saw them lose two and tie one of their first four games. After the 0-2-1 start, the Dons put on an excellent stretch drive and won four straight from San Jose State, Stanford, San Francisco State and California.

In a rugged NCAA playoff game with San Jose State, the Dons edged the Spartans 2-1 and USF won the West Regional thus advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Tony Sullivan returned from injury to score both goals in the win over San Jose State. In the quarterfinals against defending national champion St. Louis, after leading twice, the Dons finally succumbed 3-2 in “sudden-death” overtime on November 30 at Balboa Park in San Francisco.

Five USF players were named to the All-Conference first team - Dennis Calvo, Pepe De La Reza, Fernando Lopez-Contreras, Pepe Martinez and Ricardo Olivas. Martinez topped the Dons with 16 goals (USFAthletics).

Eduardo Rangell was his speedy deceptive self as he moved up and down the right wing, but it was the left side— Ric Olivas at outside left and Henry Lopez Contreras at inside left — that caught the crowd's eye. Olivas had complete control of the game as he moved at will around the hapless defenders assigned to him (TheFoghorn).
