First base should be one of those battles that delight a coach. Marty Cole, a twenty four year old sophomore who spent a couple of years in the Air Force, is the current owner of the position. He finished the year with a with a .258 average and can fill in at any infield spot.

Marty Cole lead off the first game of the series with a single and then he stole second base. After Jim Berriatua and Joe Marion were retired, Pete Santora walked and Mauro Luvisotti reached base on an error while Cole scored. Don Benedetti then singled Santora home for the second run of the inning. After the Rebels scored two to tie it up in the top ofthe third on a home run and three singles, the Dons scored two more in the bottom half of the inning. Joe Marion walked and Pete Santora singled. Luvisotti then hit a two run double but was thrown out when he tried to go to third on the play. The Rebels tied it up again with two runs in the fifth but they were buried by four San Francisco runs in the sixth. After a single by Paul O'Leary and a sacrifice by Dennis Yamamoto, third baseman Rusty Jackson singled and Marty Cole walked to load the bases (TheFoghorn).

He attended Polytechnic High School and was inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame.
