A native of San Francisco, Frederick Buck played football and tennis for the Dons. He graduated in Economics in 1943.
Tennis Coach Richard Mulcahy, S. J„ won't believe it but the best tennis prospect in the school is Fred Buck, the big Emporium Clothing dealer. Buck was runner-up in the Stale Junior Net Championships in 1938 and second in the AAA doubles the same year. He has faced Bill Tilden, Frank Kovacs, Don Budge, Eddie Amark, Joe Hunt and Alice Marble on the courts. Mulcahy thinks we're kidding him about the Buck-Tilden match but here's the fact . . . California Tennis Club, court No. 4, 1938 (TheFoghorn).
Don Alumnus Wins Commission With U.S. Marine Corps
Fred Buck, a graduate of the class of '42, has just won the golden bars of a Second Lieutenant in the famed Fighting Marines, the Marine Public Relations Section, reported LT. FRED BUCK this week. Fred had enlisted in the Marine Reserve last April, and was called to active service in August. Buck was placed in the Candidate's Class, and ordered to Quantico, Virginia, where he completed successfully the Corps rigid ten-week indoctrination and training program. Upon completing this phase of his course a few days ago, he was ordered to the Reserve Officers' class, also situated in Quantico. He will remain there for the next few months and take his final advanced work. Fred transferred to USF from Notre Dame at the close of his first year, and immediately took an active part in University life. He was a varsity fullback in his sophomore year and held that position for three years. Not confining his attention to the gridiron, Fred was also prominent in tennis and golf. His brother, Christian Buck Jr., is an Army flying officer (TheFoghorn).
