The worst was yet to come, however. The score was knot tied 4-4 going into the sixth frame of the second tilt. With two men down, the Spartan pitcher slapped a single to right field, and circled the bases to score, when the Don fielder let the ball go through him, and the relay man bobbled the eventual throw. Down 5-4, a rally was in the making when Joe Gill doubled in the bottom of the sixth. He waited at second when it appeared that the SJS outfielder would catch Grant Steer's mighty blast to deep center. The ball fell safely, however, and Steer was right on Gill's heels as they both churned past third base, practically in tandem. Coach Benedetti, flailing his arms in a futile attempt to stop at least one of the runners, watched helplessly as both men headed for home plate. The Spartan catcher caught the perfect peg, nailed Gill, attempting to squirt past him, then gracefully pirouetted to his right to tag out the startled Steer. End of rally, inning, and ball game (TheFoghorn).
