Robert Lommori attended Galileo High School and played both baseball and soccer for the Dons. He captained the soccer team his last year, and graduated in 1952.
The up and coming sophomore members of last year's sparkling freshman team could quite easily fill the weaknesses that exist on the team this year. If so, the Hilltoppers will field a strong and well balanced organization that will be a menace to anybody they face. With veteran Tom Pagee and sophomores Bob Thollander, Don Townsend, and Wally Dawidczik, the pitching staff has depth and ability. Also listed on the pitching staff is Bob Murray, a junior who is out for his first time. If he develops, it would aid the cause of the Dons considerably. The catching department will be handled by Bob Adams, Paul Reardon, Bob Lommori, and Frank Vairello. Adams and Reardon are returnees, while Lommori is up from the frosh team and Vairello is a transfer from Visalia JC.
The foremost question in Coach Donoghue's mind was probably: "Who will replace last year's stars?" Gus will have to find replacements for All-American Jimmy Diaz at right half; Bob Lommori, Bill Bigarani and Jim Kilday, all of whom are now in the service. And also All-Conference selection Iike Ozigbu, who is taking graduate engineering at Santa Clara. Ozigbu, incidentally, will be coaching the Bronco varsity soccer team this year.
Oh yes, there are some native sons on the club. Outstanding American player is Captain Dick Baptista, of Portuguese extraction, a mean center-forward who had two scoring opportunities in the championship game with Penn State one season ago, and capitalized on both. Comedian and goal-keeper, Angelo Carmassi deserts his Minestrone Four quartet to perform before the net and thwart the scoring thrusts of USF opponents. Carmassi also cavorts for the Olympic Club, and joined an SF aggregation last season to clash with the Mexican All-Stars. He and Baptista head the North Beach contingent of Tony Ragusa, Bob Lommori, Al Massucco, and Mal Riccardi. Also prominent are two other San Francisco products: Bob Korbus and Bill Cox. Korbus is an excellent halfback with a high academic standing, and the rangy Cox, goal-keeper behind Carmassi, is a team player with three campaigns left (TheFoghorn).
