John William McCall was born in San Francisco on July 18, 1925 and attended USF. He served in the Pacific Theater as a member of the United States Marine Corps. After the war, he pitched for the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the New York Giants from 1948 to 1957. He was 6' and 180 lbs., and batter and threw right. He also pitched for the Sn Francisco Seals from 1951 to 1953. 

According to the Baseball Register, McCall was nicknamed "Windy" by Red Sox slugger Ted Williams as a young player when asking about his bats. Williams said to a sportswriter in referring to McCall, "the windy one told me when I was pitching batting practice to bring up some of my good bats (Wikipedia)."
