Hogan wasted no time in appointing assistant coach Brian Nelson as the Hilltoppers' new Head Coach. Nelson, whose collegiate career ended last year, is a former Dons' first baseman and pitcher. "I'm terribly flattered," said a tearful Nelson. "I have no coaching background, no leadership experience, and no patience. I feel ready." Hogan was quick to give credence to Nelson's on-the-field experience as a Don, his rapport with the players, and his cheerful, optimistic attitude as evidence of latent coaching skills. A source who wished to remain unidentified said that the terms of Nelson's contract included a six-figure salary, a new vehicle, and University- sponsored Rogaine treatments for Nelson's entire tenure.
Game two proved to be one of the biggest heart breakers this whole season. The Dons were actually leading 5-4 in the seventh and final inning when coach Bowman, in a surprising move, pulled starter Brian Nelson with USF one out away from the upset Nelson finished with eight strike outs and three earned runs (TheFoghorn).
