In high school at Palma in Salinas, Pete Cling was Co-Player of the year in the Coast Athletic Association and was All-Diocese in football. He was Second Team All-League in basketball as a senior and was noted for his superb rebounding skills despite standing at only 5-9. He was the only Chieftain to earn All-CAA recognition that year. At Hartnell College, he was a two-way star and played linebacker for the Dons football team. He graduated from USF in 1970 in Law and Economics.
