Jones played second base and left field for the Dons, under Coach Benedetti. He had a solid batting average with a career average of .290. Jones started at second base for the 1971 Dons baseball team, which at that time was considered the greatest baseball teams in USF history. That season, the Dons finished with a record of 32-15-1, including a 15-2 mark in the WCC en route to a second place finish in the conference. Jones enjoyed a 35 year career with Chevron Oil company and has coached high school basketball at Castro Valley and Monte Vista High Schools.
Opening the week at fog-shrouded SF State, the Dons dropped a game in which they had a four run lead at the end of seven innings. Bill Curran's two-run homer put them ahead 2-0 in the second. In the next inning Gary Senn, Tad Tassone, and Larry Jones all singled with Jones driving in Senn. Bill Downing's sacrifice fly made it 4-0. In the seventh Paul O'Leary singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on Randy Zanze's sacrifice fly.
Highlights of the second game were an eight-run scoring outburst in the first and Dave Hoffman's towering home run to left. John Cosmos, Gary Senn, Ray Speediacci, Larry Jones, and Stan Tsukamoto all had hits in the inning, with Curran, Senn, Speediacci, Jones and Tsukamoto getting RBIs. Tsukamoto was a perfect 3 for 3 on the afternoon. Curran and Cosmos each had two hits. Hoffman hit his first home run of the year in the sixth, he now has a slugging percentage of 1.000 (TheFoghorn).
