Kenneth H. McAlister was born on April 15, 1960, in Oakland, CA. He played high school football, basketball, and baseball at his local Oakland High School.  He earned third-team Parade All-American basketball honors as a senior, and was the Oakland Athletic League Defensive Player of the Year in football. Despite being recruited by Notre Dame and Michigan State he chose USF, and played four years of basketball for the Dons from 1978 to 1981. He averaged 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game his senior year. He was a member of the 1981 WCC Championship basketball team. McAlister went undrafted in the 1982 NBA draft, but was signed by the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL in 1982, despite not having played football since high school. He played safety and special teams in nine games for the Seahawks in 1982, and in two games in 1983, before being released in 1983. McAlister signed with the San Francisco 49ers later in 1983, but played in only four games.

In 1984, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in 15 games, starting nine, during the 1984 season, totaling four sacks, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery. He missed the entire 1985 season due to injuries, and most of the 1986 and 1987 seasons, after which he became a free agent.
