Yuri Simpson graduated from USF with a Degree in 1990 and attended University of San Diego Law school, graduating in 1995. He practices as an attorney in San Diego, CA.
Best known of the returning defenders is sophomore John Doyle. Doyle was named a Second Team All-American as a sophomore, and spent the summer as a member ol the U.S. National team. The experience of playing in the Pan-American Olympic Qualification Korea President's cup and World University Games should accelerate Doyle's development as a soccer star of national stature. Alongside John, as he has been for several years, is former Fremont Celtic teammate Alan Bailey. Bailey is a hard-tackling defender who is a Dons fan favorite, and an attacker's nightmare. Julian Kowalski returns to play the stopper position as he did last season. Senior Bernie Murphy is one of the leading candidates to replace Boardman. while many other excellent defenders look to break into the lineup. Among them are returnees John Kinyon and Mark DeCroce, and newcomer Yuri Simpson.
The Dons-Huskie game was no easy matter, as U-Conn battled USF almost to a standstill until a cross by Yuri Simpson 15 minutes into the second half was wickedly nailed by midfielder Tim McEnery at the lop of the penalty box. "I hit it pretty solid," said the typically taciturn McEnery. Although USF didn't allow a goal in either game, Fresno State claimed the title for the second time in two years on the basis of goal differential. U-Conn captain Chris Reif was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Against the Gators of San Francisco State, the Dons played well but weren't without problems. They hadn't really seen the offside trap that SF State used extensively and were caught offsides 12 times. The first Don goal against the Gators was scored by defender Yuri Simpson off the crossbar at 25:40 in the second half. The second goal came all of 16 seconds later by Marco Luchetta on an assist by Steven Torkelson (TheFoghorn).
