Their most pleasant surprise was the Alaskan connection. Lisa Sandel. Sandel. now competing for a starting job in the women's basketball back court, was without a doubt the Cross Country franchise. Each week. Sandel lowered her own school record (now 18.45) and placed 9th at the league championship meet. Behind Sandel was a score of other talented harriers. Mary Jilke. when she could stay healthy, provided scoring punch and inspirational leadership. Eileen Brennan. a veteran work horse, contributed to the team with dramatic flare and late-race kicks. June Brewer, a multi-talented young lady, developed into a top notch runner and competitor for the female Don's. Mary Walsh. Balinda Romas, Pat Moreno and at times, Cindi Lefferts rounded out the girls roster of dedicated, hard working runners. The team finished in the middle of their league, but their success was better recorded in spirit and enthusiasm rather than wins and losses.
Ladies X-Country the Women's cross country team fared well in a championship meet at Stanford last Friday. Lisa Sandel finished 9th and once again broke a USF school record with a time of 18:45.6. Other scores: Eileen Brennan 21:19.5: Mary Walsh 23:33.5; June Brewer 23:58.3; Belinda Ramos 25:58.3: and Pat Moreno 30:28.6 (TheFoghorn).
