Biography: Lopez was born and raised in Globe, Arizona a small copper mining town known for its Mexican food. His passion for ministry comes from the seeds of faith planted in him as a young boy growing up. His dad played a key role in Rigo’s life telling him about Jesus. Rigo saw his dad’s faith in action as he was instrumental in planting churches, overseeing mission trips and supporting orphanages in Mexico.
Rigo played college baseball at Arizona Western College before transferring to the University of San Francisco where he was an All-Conference catcher. Lopez played baseball for two years on the Hilltop.
He graduated with a Psychology Degree. After he finished his baseball career with USF, he served as a player/coach in Vienna, Austria. He was an Assistant Baseball Coach for the Green and Gold for two years. He worked with at risk youth before joining FCA staff in September, 2006.
His role as Metro Director is to provide leadership and support in the South Bay, Peninsula, San Francisco and Marin County. He also serves as a Team Chaplain to the San Francisco Giants (BayAreaFCA).Â
Did You Know?: Lopez worked in a volunteer position for ten years serving as the San Francisco Giants Spanish Team Chaplain, providing spiritual leadership specifically to the Latin ballplayers and their families.
Life After USF: After graduation, Lopez was a player/coach for the Vienna Bulldogs of the Austrian Baseball Federation. He then returned to the Hilltop as an Assistant Baseball Coach under Nino Giarratano for two years. Currently he is the Metro Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.Â
