Raoul "Lou" Florival

  • Class
    1986
  • Honors
    Men's Soccer (1984-1986)

Raoul Florival enrolled at USF without the slightest intentions of joining the soccer squad. However, he found himself being drawn into the pro-first at the junior varsity level and then eventually breaking into the prestigious ranks of the varsity team.

Raoul was one of a number of players that accumulate impressive soccer reputations, but are somehow passed over when it comes to recruiting. At San Rafael School, Raoul was named All-Conference player two years in a row and MVP his senior year. Despite these outstanding feats, when he graduated, serious soccer no longer played a large role in his life education took priority. *When I first came here I decided not to play soccer because USF had a very experienced and mature team. Most of the players were older, and many of them stemming from European clubs. At first I felt intimidated. but I started playing my sophomore year and was persuaded to carry on. I owe much of it to the coaching staff. especially Steve Negoesco for recognizing my potential."

Although Raoul has been plagued with some bad breaks throughout his career. he was able to make a name for himself as a solid defender. Next year should see him making a name for himself in the accounting world, although at present he is unsure whether he will return to Haiti or merely remain within reach in San Rafael.

Although Steve Negoesco is fortunate in having the majority of his squad returning to represent the Hilltop next year, perhaps it will not seem complete without such talents. Whenever a player leaves he will always take something with him leaving a void, and in the words of Steve Negoesco: *It is a void that will be hard to fill (USFFoghorn)."
